It was the 1860s, the middle of the modern mechanical age. Mrs Elizabeth Hetherington and her husband were very comfortably off owning an estate that included two farms, workshops, cottages and woodlands and were the major employer for the villagers of Fulking.
The only strange thing about Mrs Hetherington's household was that her maids never seemed to stay very long. And it was only when Doctor Palmer investigated the reason why, that the diabolical truth emerged.
